So this year I took part in the Tough Guy event on the second weekend it was offered in Rotorua. So the course had already been mud-ified the previous weekend. Kieran and I did this together and we got off to a good start. Unfortunately his knee gave him trouble on our second lap to complete the full 12km. We still were able to complete the course in 1 hour 37 minutes. I was the 24th female in my age group which I was pretty happy with. When you crossed the finish line we were given a Big Ben meat pie, and yes to everyone who has asked I DID eat it! I appreciate that pies aren't an everyday food and this was a once in a year event, so I must say I quite enjoyed my pie!! Anything warm after running through the mud and wading through ponds of freezing cold water up to chest level was going to be a winner on the day! I competed in the Mount Joggers and Runners 10km event at Mount Maunganui on 3rd June. I was pleasantly suprised with my result as I was placed 7th in my age category. I was 15th female overall out of 299 females entered. My time was 48:10 minutes. Originally I had planned for this to be my event where I found my feet again after not doing any events since my surgery. I have only been doing 3 x 20 minute cardio sessions per week on the treadmill, sometimes only 2 if I am naughty and miss a session! I know that I always get my "race day performance" and am able to do better in a race versus training, but it was a nice suprise to be ranked so near the top rather than the bottom. This now means I do need to pick up the training in regards to my running and get some more longer run sessions into the week. I have my eyes set on doing a personal best in November for the Round the Bridges event in Hamilton. Sheena Burnett Nutritionist Fit 4 Consumption Hamilton, New Zealand

Further progress yet again! I'm now jogging and able to do a couple of sets of ab work and so I am looking forward to being able to take my Core class again and have everyone working their abs. I'm not sure if you will be happy to have me back or not!! I don't yet have any events in my calendar for the year but will be looking to start picking events to train for very soon. If anyone is interested in training for an event with me let me know. Sheena Burnett Nutritionist Fit 4 Consumption Hamilton, New Zealand

I am now back to my regular hours at the gym and it has taken quite some time to recover from the surgery. Along the way I have had a couple of set backs but nothing too major. I am now back into my weight training and my only restrictions currently are running and ab work. I am hoping that these things will be able to be introduced into my training shortly. I was able to get my large intestine returned to me after surgery once it had been tested. It was different to what I expected it to look and feel like. It feels more rigid and has the hard ridges like in your throat. For anyone that is interested to see it let me know as I still have it. I don't think I will keep it long term though. I am looking forward to starting up exercise sessions and running the Nothing to Lose groups in the near future once I'm properly healed. For anyone interested in being involved in a group session let me know. Sheena Burnett Nutritionist Fit 4 Consumption Hamilton, New Zealand

The surgery had a few problems at the start and I was required to have a second surgery. I am now over this and am on the road to recovery. I am back at work part time until I am over the actual surgery, there are no problems now with the actual operation side of things and everything it was planned to do has been achieved. I am looking forward to being able to get back into my exercise. I have a few scars about 5cm each one up and one down from my belly button and 3 others on my stomach area that are only about 2cm each. I'm not too concerned about these. The result was that 1/3 of my total intestines has now been removed and I only have a small section of my large intestine remaining. None of my small intestine was removed. I lost some weight due to this surgery but it would be mainly the weight that I carried around with me due to the blockages and bloating that I constantly had prior to surgery. I will be able to give you a more realistic comparison when I'm back exercising again as I will have lost some of my muscle tissue over the past 6 weeks also. Thank you to those who visited me in hospital and have sent me messages since. I can't wait to be up and running without having to "take it slow" all the time. Slow is not really my personality!! I will be having abdominal surgery in January 2012 which will cause me to be off work for some time. I will be in touch with everyone once I'm back on my feet again probably late February or early March. There is a bit of humour (well I see it as humour) as I need to be on a pre-operative diet for 1 week prior. This consists of a maximum of 10g of fibre per day! This is NOT very much at all for someone who generally likes a good helping of vegetables. I am normally telling everyone to eat their vegetables and giving tasty recipes for making with vegetables but while you will all be doing this I will be having up to 2 x 1/3 cup servings of vegetables per day, white bread, no wholegrain anything, no wholemeal anything, plain white processed stuff is all I'm allowed. No nuts, no seeds, no fruit skins or pips, but you are thinking heck what am I allowed..............I'm allowed clear juices, and strained clear soups. So who wants to come to my dinner party, what's on the menu? Vegetable soup, without the vegetables of course - yum yum just what you wanted in the middle of summer isn't it! All in all though it's for a good reason. Once I am back on board I will be missing half of my large intestine and hoping that my overall health and ongoing digestive problems will be solved. My large intestine doesn't function properly and with a 10 year history of problems with it it has resulted in removal. I am looking forward to the surgery and most definitely will be looking forward to my first meal of vegetables post surgery! I will be checking my emails from time to time and you are welcome to email me throughout January but please just be aware that my responses may not be as quick as normal. I know a lot of you are able to continue following your meal plans we have created for you in the last part of this year and I look forward to your first appointment in 2012.....whenever that may be. Have a great Christmas and New Years break, enjoy yourselves but be sensible with keeping the results you have achieved to date in mind. Sheena Fit 4 Consumption Nutritionist Hamilton, New Zealand

Your body responds well to change, try mixing up your training to see some good results. I have added swimming into my exercise regime now, not only does it keep my training new and exciting it challenges my body in a new way. I know many people are more motivated at this time of year with summer coming and weight loss is high on the priority list. I have been eating well and exercising often and am seeing some good changes. If you need help getting motivated and staying on track please make contact and I will do my best to help you.
